Dave Angel comes from an exceptionally musical family – his father was a seasoned jazz musician, and he is the elder brother to British hip-hop star Monie Love. Born in London, 1966, he has been a pioneer of the techno scene since the late 1980’s. His underground ethos and work with the legendary pirate radio station PHASE ONE got him recognition early in his career. With the help of a couple of keyboards and a tape deck, this modest studio set up gave him the chance to release the somewhat controversial remix of ‘Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (nightmare mix)’. Annie Lennox from the band didn’t praise the track, but the release was forced due to the unprecedented reaction at club level. It debuted at number 23 in the UK charts, and launched his international career.
His future remixes would include the motor city legends Juan Atkins and Carl Craig as he was heavily influenced by the Detroit sound. He continually evolved his studio-craft for the likes of Underworld, Orbital, Sun-Electric, and Roni Size, just to name a few.
Some of his best received EPs include ‘The Family’ on Apollo, ‘Royal Techno’ on Rotation Records, and the classic ‘Seas of Tranquillity’. All were seen as important releases to the techno elite and firmly cemented his name in the genre. He has released singles on some of the industry’s most distinguished labels such as Outer Rhythm, Polydor/Love, Island Records, and R & S Recordings. You can also find more eclectic releases such as ‘Globetrotting’, ‘Tokyo Stealth Fighter’, ‘This is Disco’, and ‘Funk Music’, displaying his versatility as an independent producer.
His own label ‘Rotation Records’ boast an impressive roster of artists such as Adam Bayer, Vince Watson, Samuel L Session, Deetron, Christian Smith, The Advent, Laidback Luke, and Jamie Anderson. These are the artists that created and refined the sound of ‘Rotation’ and put it on the map as a label of talent and versatility.
Recent releases include ‘Harlequin’ on John Digweed’s Bedrock Records, ‘Progress/ Stand Tall’ (Bedrock Records), Christian Smith’s ‘Stranger than Paradise’ EP (Tronic Records), and ‘Berlin House Music’ on HMF Records.
This is a true veteran of electronic music, honing his craft over an impressive 20+ years of disciplined commitment to the groove, and dedication to the scene.
Mixmag and the Guardian proclaim him as “a major force in the UK techno/acid house scene”.
NME – “He continues to keep his music on the cutting edge”.
Resident Advisor – “Dave Angel remains one of the techno community’s true characters, whose industrious approach to his craft gives off an aura of positivity like no other – a kind of warmth that you cannot fail to feel through his exceptionally, uplifting music.
